Loss of smell Case study

Presenting condition: 41yr old lady who lost her sense of smell 1 month after her second child was born in May 2022.

Brief history: Client had severe rib and chest pain post partum with a phlegmy cough. She was diagnosed with pneumonia and given antibiotics in A&E.

Relevant timeline incidents:

36yrs Hypertension during first pregnancy which developed into pre-eclampsia. Lots of fear present during pregnancy, followed by an induction which caused a punctured amniotic sac. This resulted in sepsis. Fear of baby and mother dying. Emergency C-section was performed and client didn’t see her baby for 2 days as he was taken to SCUBU. This was very traumatic.

38yrs Fear reemerged during this pregnancy as client didn’t want another traumatic experience. Gave birth to second child, via planned C-section due to pre-eclampsia again. Pneumonia infection 4 weeks post partum, and then lost her sense of smell. Also developed brown coloured pigmentation on the cheekbone area.

Main remedy given: Nat Mur

After 1st prescription:

No real change to loss of smell or hyperpigmentation. Sleep quality much better. Emotionally feels calmer.

After 2nd prescription:

Client had a few secs of being able to smell an unpleasant smell e.g. her son’s nappy but it didn’t last. No change to hyperpigmentation.

After 3rd prescription:

Client can smell everything now but sporadically. Mainly this is first thing in the morning and then it fades as the day progresses. Cranial osteopathy helped with this too, but only for 1 day. No change to hyperpigmentation.

After 4th prescription:

Client can smell more frequently now even in the middle of the night. Definitely improved and the unpleasant smells are stronger now. No change with hyperpigmentation.

After 5th prescription:

Client can now smell everything! Very emotionally low this month due to overwhelming work stress.

After 6th prescription:

Client says loss of smell has relapsed. It is now ‘on’ and ‘off’ with mild smells like essential oils being smelt, but only for a few days at a time.

After 7th prescription:

Loss of smell gone relapsed again. Less intense and only a few hours at a time. Neela to detox the client again.

After 8th prescription:

Client can now smell everything quite strongly and felt bombarded with the perfumes in Duty Free at the airport! This felt good! Intensity is 10/10 and sense of smell is back to normal and food is tasting better too.

After 9th prescription:

Sense of smell diminished again but only for the last week or so. Neela to detox weekly versus per month.

After 10th prescription:

Last month was a temporary blip – Sense of smell returned and has stayed stable for over 1 month now. This was even when the remedies ran out and she was on holiday.

Summary:

This lady’s sense of smell had gone for about 2yrs and it took a while to get the right combination of remedies to help her body to detox and allow her sense of smell to return and stay. I’m continuing to work on her hyperpigmentation.
