Hair loss and other scalp conditions
Our hair is our crowning glory! Hair loss, dandruff or hair thinning can really affect our confidence and mood.
- Hair loss:
Male pattern baldness affects up to 85% of males by the age of 50 and up to 40% of females. Causes can be : hereditary, alopecia, iron deficiency, weight loss, thyroid issues, cancer treatment etc.
- Dandruff:
This is a very common condition affecting almost 50% of all adults. Causes include a dry, flaky scalp or a yeast infection. Babies have a similar condition, called cradle cap. Homeopathic remedies that can help include Graphites, Nat mur, and Phosphorus.
- Hair thinning:
This can happen in up to 40% of post-partum women as the hair shedding rate during pregnancy is lower than normal. After birth the rate appears to increase as this hair is lost over a shorter period of time. For some women, this hair loss is permanent. Homeopathic remedies that can help include Sepia, Ignatia, and Nat mur.
- Scalp psoriasis:
This is where the skin cell shedding rate is rapidly increased, forming plaques of silvery skin, with a red edge. They are itchy and flaky. Read more here.
This is a parasite infestation. The scalp can itch as lice bite to feed. Learn more about how to get rid of them naturally here .
Conventional treatments include using minoxidil (which only helps you to hold on to the hair you already have), antifungal shampoos, or coal tar shampoos (which is carcinogenic).
Alternative Treatments:
- See a trichologist – they are the experts on scalp and hair issues
- Most of these conditions are chronic. They require1-2-1 homeopathic treatment as they can’t be solved quickly.
- Castor oil or Rosemary oil massaged into the scalp can aid hair loss and hair thinning.
