Acne and what to do about it!
Acne affects 95% of UK population aged 11-30! That’s a lot of people suffering with their skin. Because it is a very visible condition, most people are mocked or ridiculed for it in some way.
‘Pizza-face’
‘Spotty’
‘Don’t you wash your face?’
‘Crater-face’
These offensive and rude remarks can often make the acne-sufferer feel really low, angry and even depressed. Acne frequently appears during the teenage years, when looks are everything. Peers can be cruel. Hurtful remarks or snide comments can scar much deeper than the physical acne scars.
Acne vulgaris is characterised by pimples, spots and pustules on the face, chest and upper back. These often appear during hormonal surges e.g. puberty, periods, menopause etc. Imbalanced hormone levels can over-stimulate the sebaceous (oil) glands in the skin, resulting in excess oil levels which can block the pores and cause acne.
Here are my 5 top tips to help with acne:
- Drink plenty of water!
Not only does this help hydrate your skin, but aids the elimination of toxins through the bowels and bladder. Your internal organs ‘grab’ any water you drink before it reaches your skin.
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine and drugs.
These are all toxins which the liver has to then eliminate. If your liver is over-worked, it then can’t breakdown the extra hormones circulating in your bloodstream. Try and use natural products on your skin like Tropic skincare.
- Avoid make-up and wash face twice daily only.
Washing with a sulphur-based soap twice a day can help to keep the oil in check. Over-washing can cause the skin to produce even more oil and so a vicious cycle is set up. Make-up blocks the pores. Try to let the skin breathe as much as possible to decrease chances of spots becoming infected.
- Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Consider taking some supplements.
Avoid dairy products as these can increase ‘mucus’ in the body generally. Eating foods high in sugar and fat are not good for your body. Your skin is your biggest organ so choose carefully what you are feeding it! Fresh fruit and vegetables will keep your skin, internal organs and digestion all working beautifully. Supplements which can help are: Vitamin C/D/E/ B complex, natural beta-carotene, omega 3 oils, chromium, zinc and selenium
- Seek help from a homeopath to balance your hormones.
Homeopathic remedies can help to rebalance your hormones naturally, without side effects. There are many wonderful remedies which can help with the sore, unsightly spots as well as treat the underlying cause.
