Homeopathy Myths and Facts
The Placebo effect:
Homeopathy Myths and Facts
Myth no. 1: How can something so dilute really work? Surely it’s just a placebo effect?
Fact no.1: Homeopathic remedies work on an energetic, not physical level. Hence the concept of ‘the dose makes the poison’. Homeopaths use the lowest viable dose that still achieves a positive outcome for the patient.
The placebo effect can be up to 25% so it should not be ignored. However, the above ‘Myth’ only applies if the patient has the mental capacity. This means that babies, young children, older patients with memory issues, animals and plants do NOT have the capacity! Homeopathy successfully treats all of these groups.
Diseases:
Myth no.2: Diseases are caused by bacteria, viruses and other external factors.
Fact no.2: Flies are only drawn to a dirty bin! What do I mean by this? If we apply this analogy to our body, bacteria and viruses only thrive if the environment is right for them to grow.
Bacteria, viruses and fungi live on our skin, in our gut and vaginal flora and even in our mouths! However, when your immune system is comprised of a poor diet, this can lead to increased susceptibility to disease and infection. Eating processed foods, lots of refined sugars, over-zealous washing (esp. of the vaginal area), and decreased fluid intake can all lead to a bacterial or fungal infection.
Modern Medicine:
Myth no.3: Modern medicine is faster than alternative medicine and actually cures people.
Fact no.3: ‘Modern’ medicine has only been around for about 100 years. Complimentary alternative medicine (CAM) has been around for thousands of years. Modern medicine only treats the symptoms, not the root cause of a disease.
When talking about homeopathy myths and facts, polypharmacy is relevant here too. Because if you are in pain, a doctor may prescribe co-codamol (paracetamol and codeine). The codeine in this painkiller will constipate you, and they may well prescribe a lactulose laxative. Furthermore, this can leave you dehydrated and you can end up with a UTI (urinary tract infection). Again the doctor may prescribe antibiotics to help with this.
So you are now taking several drugs to address the side effects of the original drug prescribed! However, no one asked you why you are in pain.
Complementary and Alternative Medicine:
Myth no. 4: CAM methods are all a bit fake and no one really uses them or believes in them.
Fact no. 4: As stated before, CAM therapies have been around for thousands of years. Ancient Chinese and Indian therapists used careful observation of symptoms, listening to the patient, and had a good knowledge of how the body and mind work together. Knowledge of herbs, plants and other remedies was passed down from one generation to the next.
Or simply ask friends and family! That friend who is never ill? Everyone in the office with ‘that’ cough, but not your boss? What is their secret? It may well be CAM therapies.
