Psoriasis and Rosacea
These 2 skin conditions can be unsightly, uncomfortable and unbearable. Whilst they are both distinct and separate skin conditions, both are linked to the bowels and lung energy in Chinese medicine.
1. Psoriasis
2% of the UK population suffer with psoriasis. It is an auto-immune skin condition characterized by ‘plaques’. These are distinctly defined patches of thicker skin with silvery scales on the top and a red margin. The rate of skin cell growth in these areas is accelerated leading to thicker skin. The skin can be red itchy and sore. It is commonly found on the scalp, feet, hands, elbows and knees. There are different types of psoriasis, depending on where it presents on the body, e.g. plaque, scalp, guttae, pustular, nail etc. Psoriasis can have hereditary links and can cause Rheumatoid arthritis.
Conventional treatments include creams, UV light therapy (psoriasis responds well to sunlight and can often ‘clear up’ in the summer months), and oral medication. From my perspective, psoriasis starts in the gut! From an energetic viewpoint, Louise Hay says the plaques of psoriasis look like ‘armor-plating’ and that the body has produced these to protect us from emotional hurt, much like armor protects us from physical harm.

2. Acne Rosacea
1 in 10 people in the UK suffer with rosacea. It mainly affects 40-60yr old’s and is more common in fair-skinned women than men. It presents as a red or rosy coloration in the shape of a ‘butterfly’ across the nose and cheek area. It can be there all the time or can appear when triggered by alcohol, cheese, caffeine etc. Rosacea can also affect the eyes causing inflamed eyelids and inflamed surface of the eye. The skin can burn or sting, and the red coloration can cause embarrassment and low self-esteem. Rosacea skin can be more sensitive to the sun as well as highly perfumed or coloured skin care products. It may be wise to use products suitable for sensitive skin.
Conventional treatments include topical antifungal or antibiotic creams, long term oral antibiotics or laser therapy.
