Presenting condition: Loose bowels and pant soiling in 7yr old boy.
Brief history: Child is potty trained but frequently doesn’t go to the toilet for stooling and hence has an accident.
Relevant timeline incidents:
0yrs Mother didn’t feel safe during her pregnancy. Had an ongoing court case with the father of the older sibling, and this was very stressful. At 5 months pregnant, she began to get ill. She suffered with pre-natal depression and psychosis. She wanted to die daily.
0yrs Birth was lovely easy homebirth over 4hrs. Mother wasn’t able to breastfeed, even after trying repeatedly.
3yrs Didn’t ask to go to toilet at preschool. Started having ‘accidents’ here.
4yrs Stool soiling in pants was still occurring at primary school, however the school were not keen to have him there anyway. Moved school.
5yrs Spending a lot of time in the forest at new school, but the toilets are indoors, so despite being asked or given the opportunity to use the toilet before a forest walk, he declined. Then an ‘accident’ would inevitably happen.
8yrs Still happening and mother is desperate to change his behaviour and stop throwing his soiled pants!
Main remedy given: Sulphur
After 1st prescription:
Still very windy but going once daily rather than 2-3 times a day. Still soiling pants 6/7 days. He is not keen to talk about the poo ‘accidents’. He has been nicer to mum for 1 week and actively hugged her! Otherwise still quite defiant. Takes a long time to fall asleep.
After 2nd prescription:
Only 2 bad incidents this month but they were firmer stools not so loose. Still soiling pants 5/7 days. Falling asleep quicker now. Wobbly tooth now gone and new ones coming up. Nausea and travel sickness during the treatment month, so gave interim prescription.
After 3rd prescription:
Pant soiling is still daily but no big accidents! Lots of wind as dad has been giving him lots of wheat and dairy which makes this worse. He now changed his dirty pants himself, which is huge as he previously hid them from his mum. He had no accidents at school. He also told mum he was going to do a poo! Much more confident and better in himself emotionally. Travel sickness much better not spitting up saliva and not vomited.
After 4th prescription:
1 stool accident since last month. Less windy and firmer stools generally. Mum is definitely throwing away less pants. Confidence still good in himself, but still feeling unwanted. Need to work on this now.
After 5th prescription:
Big accident in the forest yesterday with lots of wind. However now only throwing 1 pant away per week! Travel sickness gone for 3 weeks and now only occasionally.
Summary:
This child was capable of stooling in the toilet but was not keen and this then resulted in ‘accidents’, mess and embarrassment for mum. He is now more in control and mum is not having to constantly buy new pants for him!
