Indigestion (Dyspepsia): Pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen
Heartburn: Burning pain behind breastbone (sternum)
Reflux (GORD): Acid reflux from stomach irritating oesophagus. Stomach acid can also cause burning sensation at the back of the throat.
Indigestion is suffered by 40% of UK adults with 25% suffering from heartburn. Reflux is prevalent in 20% of UK adults. Symptoms appear soon after eating or drinking. Patients often feel full or bloated. These digestive issues are worse for spicy rich foods, alcohol, lying down or any pressure on the waistband area.
Hiatus hernia is slightly different to the above conditions, but I will mention it here for completeness. It is when the upper part of the stomach bulges through the diaphragm. Symptoms here are similar to the above conditions: heartburn, reflux, bloated abdomen, nausea, bad breath, difficulty swallowing, and food regurgitated into the mouth.
Treatment:
Conventional medicine treats these conditions with alginate liquids such as Gaviscon® or antacids which only work for a very short period of time. They contain E numbers which are banned in foods due to risk of allergic reactions.
My number one homeopathic remedy for heartburn, indigestion and reflux is Nux vom. You can make yourself a ‘gripe water’ tea. Make peppermint tea and then add dill and caraway seeds. All these are carminative on the bowels and help to ease any trapped wind or bloating. Carbo veg is our best homeopathic remedy for trapped wind.
Supplements to consider if you are suffering from heartburn frequently: MSM, omega 3, pectin, bromelain (contained within fresh pineapple), kefir or other fermented foods, Vit B complex, Vit C, Vit D, Vit E, Vit K and zinc.
If you are suffering chronically with any of these conditions please do reach out to see how I can help you with homeopathy.
