Adenoids, snoring and nasal congestion for a 3yr old
Presenting condition:
3yr old where each cold turns into thick mucus and then goes to chest, with dry barking cough at night. Normally takes blue inhaler and 2 weeks to clear totally.
Current medication:
Salbutamol inhaler, beclomethasone inhaler, multivitamins, omega 3 supplements
Relevant timeline incidents:
Stressful pregnancy for mother. Buying a house, made redundant and relationship issues with father of the child. Daily anti-clotting injections during pregnancy and 3 months post-partum due to historical DVT. 37 weeks developed cholestasis, due to liver overload. In Chinese medicine the liver energy is associated with anger or resentment.
Emergency C-section birth.
0yrs First cold aged 2-3 weeks old. Breastfed for 16months. Had regular colds every 3 months or so.
4months Gastroenteritis for 2 weeks then got bronchitis.
8months Bronchitis and pneumonia. Was in hospital for 5 days on oxygen, I/V antibiotics and steroids.
1yr Admitted to hospital with tonsilitis. Tonsils were very large, inflamed and red.
14months Started nursery and had almost non-stop colds.
20months Parents relationship ended.
2.5yrs Dad moved out
Relevant familial history:
Parents are both of Caribbean heritage. Mother suffers with hayfever.
Main remedy: Pulsatilla
After 1st prescription:
Had a cold 2 weeks ago, but dry cough remedy worked after only 2 doses! Used blue inhaler for 1 day only (previously would need to use it for 1 week). Clear runny mucus from nose, not thick or gluey as before. Much shorter recovery time and the cold didn’t drag on and on. Sleeping longer and heavier. Doesn’t need to be ‘patted’ on the back to get off to sleep. Heavy breathing now so no longer snoring! No longer reaching inside mummy’s top for boobies.
After 2nd prescription:
Another cold last week. Phlegm on the chest this time not in the nose. She was able to cough it up and spit it out. She felt proud of herself doing this. Previously she would cough, cough, cough and then vomit. It moved from a dry cough to a chesty loose cough very quickly. Quite clingy as leaving nursery to start big school soon. No longer breathing heavily or snoring. Still not reaching inside mummy’s top. Recommended Bach flower Walnut for big changes.
After 3rd prescription:
First 2 weeks in reception class at big school. She was very clingy and crying at drop off. 3rd week onwards she was happy to go to school. Lots more tantrums but possibly related to tiredness of first term at school. Slight regression with sleep, as needing ‘patting’ on back to fall asleep and mummy to hold her hand. Had a cold 1 week ago, but only lasted a few days, so a much shorter period. Nose now clear! Mum almost forgot this had been happening. Slight regression so reaching for boobies but only when had a nightmare.
Summary:
Shorter less intense colds, down from 2 weeks to few days. Antibiotics not needed. Sleeping better. Mum very happy! Now using blue kit for maintenance. Classic Pulsatilla child picture.
