The Annual January Health Month can be amazing!
New Year – Same amazing you
Happy New Year!
January can be a miserable time of year. The weather is cold and grey. The credit card bill has arrived. Everywhere you look there are adverts for losing weight, giving up smoking or getting fit.
However, my blog today is to advise you NOT to do any of these things during January. Pardon?
Do NOT not start new things in January:
That’s right! Your motivation to do these things is quite low in January. The pressure to keep New Year’s resolutions can be too high.
January Health Month is littered with both physical and mental health-related awareness days and expectations such as;
- Veganuary
- Walk your dog month
- Love your Liver month
- Dry January
- Joining a gym
- Improve your diet
- Work off the Christmas indulgence.
- Paying back the debts.
Don’t make it harder on yourself! Small sustainable steps are more achievable and beneficial long term.
People often set themselves impossibly high expectations and then feel like a failure when they don’t meet them. You are more likely to stick to a SMART plan (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound). You can make yourself accountable by telling others your goal so they can support you. Charting your progress in a diary is also good, as well as celebrating the small wins.
Use your January Health Month wisely for planning:
Another great thing to improve your health in January is to use this time for reflection. What do you want out of the coming year? What did you enjoy about last year? What do you not want to do this year? Make a list, mood board, Pinterest board etc. Can you plan start breaking these down into small steps to help you achieve your goal?
Let me know how you get on – I’d love to know!
